For some mysterious reason, your computer is running slower than chilled molasses. Your printer just wont print. That bizarre, blue and indecipherable error message pops up on your computer screen every time you try to open a program.
It used to be the fix could only be found on the receiving end of an hours long telephone call during which a disembodied customer service technician would command you to try this, try that, or the ever-irritating describe what you see.
Since last year, Professional Computer Associates, a Red Hook-based computer consulting firm, has been helping people fix computer glitches without forcing the user to suffer through one of those interminable telephone calls or schedule a time when a technician can come look at the computer.
Using HelpMeRemote.com, a nationwide service, Professional Computer Associates provides remote diagnostic support and repair services to virtually anyone with a PC problem.
Anything that could be fixed through a phone call or by a person coming to your house and moving a mouse or tapping the keyboard we can fix remotely, said Robert Shoemaker, the senior consultant and president of Professional Computer Associates, which has been providing computer support to small businesses in Dutchess and Ulster counties since 1999.
Shoemaker admits the idea of allowing someone else to gain control of your computer can be a little bit scary, but, because the customer must allow the company to gain access to his or her computer through the Internet, he said, the service is completely secure. Additionally, the company makes a video transcript of each service call.
Unlike service contracts, which require a fee to be paid regardless of whether service is ever needed, HelpMeRemote.com offers subscriptions beginning at $30 for 15 minutes and it allows people to carry over any unused minutes indefinitely, Shoemaker said.
And the new venture, he said, has not taken away from the company's primary service, which is providing computer support services to small businesses.
We provide on-site hands-on support, and we also provide remote support and telephone support for any and all types of businesses, he said.
Providing that type of support to businesses, Shoemaker said, is essential to small operations that rely on computers but don't have hours to spend on the telephone with a technician trying to solve a problem.
If the problem cant be fixed by one of the company's technicians, Shoemaker said, that technician will contact a software vendor to rectify the situation.
We know how to interact with them, Shoemaker said.
Professional Computer Associates has eight technicians in Red Hook and two in New York City who are fully engaged at all times with clients locally and across the nation.
The company's technical abilities are so well respected that in July, Microsoft named Professional Computer Associates a Gold Certified Partner, a recognition which, according to Brian Zeve, managing director of the professional services industry group at Microsoft, is only given to companies that have demonstrated the highest levels of client service, proven their experience and attained advanced certification. |
